Maui Fire Department firefighters responded to reports of a structure fire in the area of Honokohau Valley on Tuesday at 5:34 p.m.

Engines from Napili, and Lahaina responded along with tankers from Lahaina and Wailea.

On scene, crews found a makeshift structure fully involved by fire along with an area of 60 ft x 40 ft of loose piled items also on fire. Firefighters worked to quickly knock down flames and contain the fire.

Fire officials say that because of the arrangement and large amount of loose items which were involved, complete extinguishment was not officially declared until 9:42 p.m.

A firefighter was injured in the incident having suffered lacerations to hands. He was treated and released from Maui Memorial Medical Center later in the evening.

Damages are estimated at $5,000 and the cause of this fire is undetermined.
