Wailuku man dies due to a motor vehicle accident in Kahului

On Monday, January 25, 2016 at approximately 11:53 a.m., a Motor Vehicle Crash occurred on Kea Street, at the intersection of Kaiemi Street in Kahului. The crash occurred as a blue 2013 Suzuki GSXR 1000 motorcycle traveling west on Kea Street, failed to negotiate a left bend in the roadway.

The operator laid the motorcycle down and collided into a rock wall on the north side of the roadway. The operator subsequently sustained critical life threatening injuries resulting from the crash. The victim was transported to the Maui Memorial Medical Center Emergency Room where he later succumbed to his injuries.

The operator of the motorcycle has since been identified, following the notification of next of kin, as 40 year old Martin MORTENSEN of Wailuku.

Preliminary investigation revealed the operator was wearing his helmet at the time of the crash.

The involvement of speed, drugs, and alcohol are still pending as the investigation is ongoing.

This is Maui County’s 3rd traffic fatality for 2016 as compared to no fatalities at this time last year.
