PC: Anthony Goodrich / MAUIWatch

On Thursday, November 17, 2016 at about 5:15 p.m., a renter was cleaning out his storage unit at the Kihei Maui Self Storage located at 115 East Lipoa Street in Kihei when he found a small unexploded ordnance in a metal container that was left behind by the previous renter.

The container was marked as U.S. military and the ordinance appeared to be an old hand grenade.

Police evacuated the building and closed off the surrounding area. No roads or nearby businesses were affected by the closure.
The U.S. Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team was notified and made an assessment.

The EOD team will schedule a flight to Maui in order to dispose of the ordnance. In the meantime, Maui police continue to close off the building.
