At about 2:17 a.m. on August 2, Maui Police Department officers were sent to 401 Alakapa Place in Paia regarding an alarm. Shortly, after Dispatch received several calls regarding multiple gunshots heard and that a male was shouting.
Officers arrived on the scene and observed the male, later identified as 40-year-old Nicolas Niely of the Kihei area, barricaded within one of the buildings, holding a semi-automatic pistol. Officers secured the scene and began negotiations with Niely to surrender.
MPD Special Response Team was activated and responded to the scene.
The Negotiator was on duty and arrived quickly. The Negotiator began talking with Niely. They spoke for over two hours, during which time Niely said he was going to shoot himself in the head.
At about 5:03 a.m., Niely shot himself in the hand, then exited the building and surrendered to police. He was taken into custody for Burglary in the First Degree. Medics treated Niely on scene, and later transported him to the Maui Memorial Medical Center for further treatment.
Niely sustained non-life-threatening injuries. No other injuries were reported.
At the time of this writing, Niely is in police custody and at the MMMC being treated. The investigation is ongoing.
