MFD Responds to Brush Fire in Kahikinui

The Maui Fire Department is battling a brush fire in the area of Kahikinui that began late on Sunday.

Fire crews were initially called just before midnight to nine separate fires between mile markers 23 and 27 on Piilani Highway. As of about 1 p.m. on Monday all but three of the fires had been 100 percent contained.

The Kahikinui homesteads were evacuated early Monday morning but evacuations have since been lifted.

MFD officials say crews are currently working on hitting hotspots and securing the perimeters of the remaining fires and that “good progress” is being made towards containment.

In total, the fire has burned about 65 acres. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
