Motorcyclist killed in wrong-way crash along Haleakala Hwy

On Thursday, December 24, 2020, at approximately 11:16 p.m., a motor vehicle crash occurred on Haleakala Highway (37), 1030ft northwest of Haliimaile Road in Pukalani.

Preliminary investigation reveals a 2006 Harley Davidson motorcycle was traveling in the wrong direction on a divided portion of Haleakala Highway. At the location of this crash, the highway was divided by a concrete median.

The motorcycle was traveling Kula direction (southeast) within the Kahului bound lanes of travel. At the same time, a 2020 Toyota Camry was traveling Kahului direction (northwest) on Haleakala Highway. The motorcycle operator, within the wrong lane of travel, collided head-on into the Toyota.

As a result of the collision, the motorcycle operator Greg HANKS (63 yr. old male/Pukalani) sustained fatal injuries and died at the scene. The operator of the Toyota (30 yr. old female/ Wailuku) did not sustain any injuries as a result of this crash.

The operator of the motorcycle was not wearing a helmet at the time of this crash.

The operator of the vehicle was wearing her seatbelt. The air bags did not deploy.

Alcohol is believed to be a factor related to the operator of the motorcycle. Blood tests are still pending and a final determination has yet to be made.

The involvement of speed and drugs has not been determined as the investigation is still pending.

Currently, there have been 9 traffic fatalities for the County of Maui this year as compared to 23 at the same time last year.
